Chapter 11

Pearl Speaks

“Go away,” I said, but it came out as another meow. The last thing I needed was Pearl’s blue eyes in her plump and primped face watching me in what had turned out to be the lowest point in my life—even lower than finding out Chase was a cheater.

Pearl stared at me for a long moment and then stood, arching her back. My own spine curved as I watched her slightly odd and not-at-all-pleasant response. She stood as a barrier between me and the comfort of my pillow. I just wanted to sleep and pretend today never happened.

“Move,” I meowed. “Please. I need to sleep away this crisis.”

She stared at me again, unnervingly still, before tilting her head to one side and giving a wide yawn. “Managed it then, did you?”

If I’d been human, I would have gasped. As it was, I made a noise rather like hacking up a hairball.

“You’re talking to me?” My little cat’s heart raced inside my little cat’s chest, and I briefly wondered if cats could go into shock or have a heart attack.

“Well, yes. Who the devil else would I be speaking to?”

Strangely enough, I knew the tone of her voice as though I’d always known what it would be. It had the same air of indifference she’d been staring at me with for years.

“But, but...” I had nothing to give to the conversation. Mainly because I was a cat, talking to another cat who still had its butt on my pillow.

“You know, I really doubted you’d do it,” Pearl said, acting like it was perfectly normal for us to communicate with one another in the depth of night after I’d been chased by a zombie.

“Doubt what?”

“That you’d unleash your power.” She gave me a slow blink as she waited for my response. Pearl was still annoying even when we could communicate.

“What power?” The blood in my little cat’s veins ran cold. A sixth sense I didn’t know I had, or possibly blocked, tickled around in my ribs. It felt like it did when the house surged its energy around me, except now the power was coming from within me in response to Pearl’s words.

“You know, you must have felt it all this time.”

“Nope, no idea what you are talking about, and,” I paused to rub at my nose with my paw. The scent of perfume in the air had my heightened senses swirling overwhelmingly. “How are we talking?” I sat straight, my tail naturally curling around me.

“Well, you know, I’m a cat, you’re a cat, it’s a thing.” She yawned again.

“I am not a cat!” My hair bristled, and I shook my head like I had a bad taste in my mouth.

She gave me a lazy stare. “I beg to differ. You know, when Stella told me it would be you, I could hardly believe her.”

“You talk to Stella? What did she tell you?” I wanted to back away. Sensing that whatever Pearl said next might change my life forever. At the same time, I never wanted to back down from a face-off with Pearl.
